Top Choices: Gannakouriep Wilderness Camp
Ai/Ais-Richtersveld Transfrontier Park, Northern Cape
Searching for rustic accommodation away from the larger crowds? Need a piece of paradise with millions of stars decorating the night sky? If so, the Gannakouriep Wilderness Camp in the Ai/Ais-Richtersveld Transfrontier Park is the ideal overnight option. Built to resemble the style of the traditional Nama matjieshut, the accommodation is basic, but offers everything required for a comfortable stay.
The canvas dome-roofed units are equipped with two single beds, offer rustic accommodation in the park, far from the crowds. The units have en-suite bathrooms and are powered by solar energy, so use electricity sparingly. There is a gas stove in the kitchen for cooking, but a braai, or just a fire for atmosphere, is recommended. The water is incredibly brackish with high salt content, so it is best not to drink the water from the taps. Take fresh drinking water, and don’t forget to pack the firewood.
The park is known for its incredible mountain desert scenery and this camp offers the perfect vantage point from where to explore the park. As dusk falls, the sky will turn various shades of pink, and you can light the fire and enjoy the tranquillity only the silence of the Richtersveld can offer.
Cost: R1030 per night for two people
