Sleeping in the trees: A quiet getaway near Johannesburg

Sleeping in the trees: A quiet getaway near Johannesburg post thumbnail image

Sometimes the best escapes don’t require long drives or flights, especially with rising fuel prices and the cost of living. Sometimes the best escapes hide awfully close to home.

Just over an hour’s drive from Johannesburg and Pretoria, the landscape begins to change. Traffic fades, shopping centres give way to open grasslands, and everything feels a little more open. After you turn onto gravel outside Bronkhorstspruit and drive a little further from civilisation, city life feels unexpectedly distant.

Nestled along the banks of the Wilge River, Markon River Lodge offers a setting that makes you forget how close you are to Gauteng’s cities.

For anyone looking for a weekend getaway near Johannesburg, a bit different from the usual hotel or guesthouse, this hidden gem deserves attention, especially with its unique Tree Lodge, providing a night among the trees with the river flowing below.

What makes Markon River Lodge so special

As we turned off the main gravel road towards the lodge, birds darted across the landscape. At the same time, hordes of little butterflies fluttered out of our way.

The first thing that struck me when we arrived was not the accommodation, but the silence. Of course, arriving on a Sunday means the crowds have already left, which was a bonus in itself. But it was the kind of silence only interrupted by birdsong, rustling grass and flowing water.

Markon River Lodge outside Bronkhorstspruit sits within natural surroundings, with the Wilge River as the centrepiece. I knew our stay here would be special.

Staying in the Tree Lodge at Markon River Lodge

Our accommodation was the Tree Lodge, arguably one of Markon River Lodge’s most unique stays. Wooden walkways lead through the trees towards three cabins. The experience immediately feels different from a traditional lodge stay. Suspended slightly above the ground, the Tree Lodge creates the illusion of floating between forest canopy and riverbank. Although there were only two of us, the Tree Lodge can accommodate up to six guests, making it ideal for a group getaway.

Tree Lodge shares an open-plan kitchen, deck and sitting area overlooking the river. It is open plan with air moving through this section, but roll-down blinds can close up in cooler conditions. We visited in autumn, but I can imagine that the setting could become cold in winter.

The deck quickly became our favourite spot. Nature lovers will appreciate that the accommodation does not separate you from the environment. Birds move freely through the trees. Butterflies drift past. The occasional spider web across the walkway reminds you that nature comes first here. For me, as a spider lover, that only added to the charm.

One small addition that could elevate the experience even further would be an outdoor boma area or fireplace for colder evenings, but it was already such a special experience. There is a braai area, but it doesn’t have the same charm as the communal area directly overlooking the river.

Wildlife and birdwatching at Markon River Lodge

One of the things I loved about Markon River Lodge is the tremendous variety of birdlife. On our way to the lodge, we spotted some bee-eaters, a black-winged kite and a raptor. And the birding just never ended. Having slept with the window wide open to hear the river even better, we woke to the sounds of the surrounding bush, birds chirping around us.

Plenty of wildlife, big and small, to see along the river at Markon River Lodge.

We also had an incessant chirper near the Tree Lodge, which I later identified as a juvenile red-chested cuckoo. Babblers bounced through nearby trees, filling the morning with noisy chatter. A thick-billed weaver darted among the reeds below. Somewhere further away, the unmistakable call of an African fish eagle echoed across the landscape.

The weather did not cooperate when we visited, so we spent most of the day on the deck enjoying the river, with rain pouring down. But when the rain stopped, we walked to the breathtaking pinnacle cliffs. Even here, we spent time soaking up the scenery and watching an African harrier hawk nesting at the top of the cliffs.

The lodge is also home to the bald ibis, but I was not lucky enough to tick them off my list. For birdwatchers looking for birding destinations near Johannesburg or Pretoria, this area offers excellent potential.

Beyond birdlife, visitors may also spot wildlife moving through surrounding grasslands during walks around the property.

Things to do at Markon River Lodge

While the peaceful surroundings are reason enough to visit, there are several things to do to keep guests busy during their stay.

There is no dangerous game, so you can walk to your heart’s content. Dirt roads and walking trails wind through the grasslands, offering opportunities to enjoy the scenery and spot wildlife along the way. Game drives are also an option.

There are also a range of activities. Challenge each other to a game of putt-putt, get active over a game of volleyball, test your strategy skills on the giant outdoor chess board, or cool down in the swimming pool.

Is Markon River Lodge worth visiting?

If you are looking for a luxury safari lodge experience, Markon River Lodge may not be what you are after. However, if your ideal break involves riverside views, birdsong, walking trails and the opportunity to disconnect from the pressures of daily life without spending half a day travelling, it’s the perfect choice.

What impressed me most was the balance between comfort and nature. The accommodation provides everything needed for a comfortable stay, yet never feels disconnected from its surroundings. Instead, the landscape remains the star of the experience. It was simple, uncomplicated and exactly what we were looking for.

The lodge has a surprisingly wide range of accommodation options, from the six-sleeper River Camp chalets and smaller Kiepersol De luxe units for couples or friends, to the en-suite Kiepersol rooms for those who don’t need a self-catering setup. There are also the Kingfisher chalet for three people, and three larger River Villas sleeping up to eight or 10 guests, making Markon an option for everything from a quiet couples’ weekend to a bigger family gathering.

Long after leaving the Wilge River behind, I found myself thinking about the small moments that had defined the stay: falling asleep to the sound of flowing water, waking to birdsong outside the window and spending unhurried hours watching nature go about its business.

Markon River Lodge may be close to Gauteng’s major cities, but it offers something that feels increasingly rare: space, quiet and an opportunity to reconnect with the natural world without travelling hundreds of kilometres to find it.

For anyone searching for a peaceful weekend getaway near Johannesburg, unusual accommodation near Pretoria or a nature-filled escape close to Gauteng, sleeping among the trees beside the Wilge River might be exactly what you need.
