I joined a group for an organised hike and we tackled the 5km Kiepersol Trail. This trail is not too difficult, but the route is slightly more challenging than the shorter routes on the property according to the information on their website. If you are an unfit hiker, certain sections might leave you catching your breath. The scenery is worth the stop though. There is an option to shorten the route for those not feeling up to the challenge of a longer walk. This is a great advantage for families with younger children who tire easily. Instead of 5km, you can finish the trail after 1.4km or 2km by picking one of the exit routes.
For those looking for variety when going hiking around Johannesburg, this trail offers it. There were flat sections, uphills, rocky areas, and even thicker sand. The trail has a few sections with steep inclines where ropes assist with grip and easier manoeuvring. People with mobility issues might struggle here though. If you tackle the longer version of the trail, there are some surprises. You will pass through a shady section next to a small tranquil stream. There are a few vantage points from where the surrounding scenery can be enjoyed.
There is good news for those looking at hiking around Johannesburg with their pets. De Wildt Adventure Trails allows leashed dogs on their trails. Notices remind dog owners to clean up after their pets. The picnic area on the property where the hike ends offers the perfect end to your adventures, a great way for the group to unwind. There are numerous seating areas and braai spots under the shady trees. With enough space between them, you will easily keep your distance from other groups. This could be the ideal spot for a braai with a group of friends, or a relaxing outing with the family. If you don’t want to bring your braai meat, ask the venue in advance about their picnic baskets. Forgot to bring firewood? The small shop near the parking area has ice and necessities such as firewood.
De Wild Adventure Trails has numerous other trails to choose from. There are plenty of other trails to choose from. Combine the 8.5km Peglerae Trail with the Ktatu Trail to hike 12.5km. The venue is open from Wednesday to Sunday from 07:00-15:00.
